I a mirror is the moniker of 23-year old artist/composer/improviser/recording engineer/sound summoner/chaos magician Chris Johnson. He resides in Columbia, SC where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Music and German and is currently pursuing a Masters of Music Composition at the University of South Carolina & working evenings at the soundboard of West Columbia’s Conundrum Music Hall. He is currently a member of electronic improvisation duo about.theWindow, radio-show-turned-two-man-band Man of Color, and semi-dormant experimental outfit ELECTRO BAMBI. He is also the founder of the open-membership improvisation group Bellhop Collective which acts as the the performance branch of Columbia-based art collective Avant-Garde Investigations, and a co-founder of Dodgy Art, a fledgling half-band half-label that’s still too young to know what it really is.
Chris can often be found biking through the city in search of forgotten corners and unused alleys, abandoned lots and empty garages, collecting and creating fascinating sounds, sights, and situations along the way.
Chris first began to take a serious interest in making music during his brief time living in Illinois when a friend convinced him to choose choir as his middle school elective instead of drama; what began as the lesser of two evils evolved over the course of the next few years into a favorite pastime, tempering a rather excessive video game habit with guitar playing and singing. While studying German in high school, he met Nikoli Krakovetsky (the other half of ELECTRO BAMBI) who showed him the basics of audio recording and editing and from that point forward sonic collages and (occasionally) songs began to take shape. His journey through the world of music has been a long and convoluted one: among his first CDs were “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie, “Psycho Circus” by KISS and “Mambo No. 5” by Lou Bega; these soon gave way to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Incubus, Nirvana, Modest Mouse, and other mixed alternative and classic rock. Progressive rock like Rush, Porcupine Tree, and King Crimson followed, accompanied by post-rock (The Evpatoria Report, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Rós, and Explosions in the Sky), noise rock (from Deerhoof to Boredoms), ambient music (Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, etc.), and myriad other genres in smaller doses. As of late his iPod has become populated with chillwave and classical, metal and drone, post-Cagean experimental music and hip hop, jazz and funk, slowcore and spoken word, etc. etc. etc. Favorite artists include: David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, David Byrne, Robert Fripp, Radiohead, Deerhoof, Olivier Messiaen, GY!BE, Death Cab for Cutie, and Incubus.
When not making music Chris enjoys watching weird films (Enter the Void, The Master, Gerry, Blue Velvet, etc.), reading weird books (1Q84, House of Leaves, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), playing weird video games (Hotline Miami, Psychonauts, Limbo, Braid, etc.), consuming and creating weird art (Fluxus, installation art, conceptual pieces, and minimalism, among other things), exploring weird twitter (@ian_miroir), and hanging out with awesomely weird friends.
